Professional Licensure

MS, Communicative Sciences and Disorders

With the master's of science program in Communicative Sciences and Disorders, NYU is authorized pursuant to the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) to enroll students in online programs in the SARA states and territories. For further details regarding NYU's NC-SARA membership please visit the NYU State Authorization website. SARA requires universities to disclose to applicants and students whether programs that lead to professional licensure meet the educational requirements for licensure in the student’s state.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders are eligible to be recommended for a New York State Initial Certificate, Teaching Students with Speech and Language Disabilities. New York State also requires successful completion of the Educating All Students exam.

Additionally, students of the Program’s Bilingual Track are eligible to be recommended for a New York State Initial Bilingual Education Extension. New York State also requires successful completion of the Bilingual Education Assessment for the issuance of the Bilingual Education Extension.

The Master of Science leads to both Initial Certification (upon graduation) and Professional Certification. For Professional Certification, New York State requires three years of full time paid Speech and Language Disabilities teaching experience.

Note, state regulations change frequently, and the information posted here may have changed at the time of your specific application to or enrollment in our program of study. States also may require applicants for licensure to pass the PRAXIS and ASHA exams and certification. Please check with the Clinical Field Placement Team (csdfieldplacement@nyu.edu) if you have specific questions about the educational requirements for licensure or other professional licensure requirements in a specific state.
