Courses

This course offers the student, whether graduate or arts administration practitioner, an intensive experience in learning about cultural policies and arts management practices in at least two European countries. The Arts Administration Study Abroad is comprised of a series of lectures, site visits, case studies, discussion sessions and presentations. Issues change from year to year as cultural policies develop in chosen venues. Students examine a combination of policy and practice, meet with arts administrators and policy makers, and present case study analyses on the basis of their lectures and onsite visits.

This course will include intensive study of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and the lyrical pronunciation rules for Italian. Students will be required to transliterate song texts into IPA and demonstrate mastery of the diction rules in the performance of assigned repertoire.

Private or group lessons (by examination) in jazz and pop violin, supplemented by extra assignments, outside practice, and observation.

An introduction to the materials of jazz arranging through examination of music scores from early twentieth-century sources to the present. Students produce their own arrangements.

An introduction to various methods of jazz arranging and composing with an emphasis on melody, counterpoint and line writing. Students will examine historic jazz music scores & produce their own arrangements.

An extension of MPAJZ-2273 with a special emphasis on arrangements for large jazz ensembles.

This course surveys the history and development of jazz music in America from the mid 1800s to current trends in popular music. Through a historical timeline, student will study jazz music’s range of styles as informed by social, regional, cultural, technological, and political trends. Realizing that all music is a reflection of historical events and the cultures they are informed by, students will analyze the close connection between jazz music and why it is known as America’s true original artform.

An introduction to the techniques used in jazz instrumental improvisation. Performance & analysis of transcribed jazz solos from periods of Early Jazz, Swing & Bebop.

Graduate level jazz improvisation for instrumentalists. Focus on extensive playing and reviewing of styles from Bop to free Jazz. Material will be distributed through student transcriptions. Emphasis will be placed on the development of technique, mental focus and comprehending new trends in harmonic practices and applying them in playing situations
