This course focuses on curriculum development for young children with a focus on science and social studies. Program planning & use of resources: the out-of-doors, maps, globes, books, pictures & other media is emphasized. This includes techniques for integrating the two content areas, evaluating current materials, & adapting programs for special students in regular classrooms. Hands-on experience with microcomputers & selected software.

MPADE-UE 1278 Dance as an Art Form 4 Credits
Dance is an integral & defining component of cultures throughout the world & throughout history. This course introduces students to dance as a live & performing art through a variety of experiences including attendance at live performances, examination of videos & theoretical texts, & physical participation in the practice & performance of dance. Through discussions, written assignments, & the creation of original dance compositions, students will explore the history & cultural relevance of a variety of forms of dance within their own lives, larger society, & the global community beyond.

Data is often considered the domain of scientists and statisticians, but its increasing dominance across nearly all aspects of life – from political and advertising campaigns to social media, dating, education, and public health — has social, political, and ethical consequences, presenting both new possibilities and new hazards. In this course we think critically about how collecting, aggregating, and analyzing data affects individual and social life, with a focus on the ways in which it reproduces and creates new structural inequalities and power asymmetries.

Course focuses on the competencies required and the issues that arise Course focuses on how analysts use data and quantitative evidence to impact policy and practice. Students will learn how to gather and analyze data to address questions about program efficacy and efficient targeting of resources. Topics will include how to choose organizational partners, implement change, build trust with organizations and civic agencies, satisfy the needs of stakeholders and manage legal, ethical, and logistical constraints. Students will discuss real case studies and appropriate ways to address them.

The goal of this course is to learn how to effectively, honestly, and persuasively
communicate about empirical research. Students develop competencies in writing, visualization, and oral presentation of technical material to both technical and lay audiences. Students learn practical strategies with ample opportunity to practice new skills. Assignments and discussion emphasize and explore the tension between concision and accuracy. Students receive feedback from the instructor, peers, and exemplars of intended audiences (e.g. employers who hire data scientists).

In this course, students acquire the skills necessary to work with and analyze administrative and survey data and, in the process, describe school-related inputs, outcomes, relationships, and trends.

APSTA-GE 2135 Data-Driven Methods for Policy Evaluation 3 Credits
Data-centric technologies are transforming public policy, enabling new approaches for evaluating policies both retrospectively and prospectively; for detecting discriminatory practices; and for auditing and designing “fair” algorithmic systems. While current computational and statistical methods often promise increased efficiency, equity, and transparency, their use also raises complex legal, social,
and ethical questions. In this course, we will discuss such methods in a variety of applications, and will examine the relationships between law, policy, and data.
APSTA-GE 2017 Databases and Data Science Practicum 2 Credits
This course provides a hands-on introduction to extracting, transforming, and visualizing data using real-world datasets. Students learn to query databases and join datasets using SQL, and learn to summarize, visualize, and map data in R using the tidyverse. Students also gain experience with git, enhancing their ability to work in modern collaborative environments. Alongside these modules, an ongoing emphasis of the course is to practice how to be a curious, skeptical, and articulate data scientist.

Explores early and obsolete media technologies. Students in this course learn methods for restoring media artifacts to their deep social, cultural, and personal context through, including, but not limited to, media archaeology; word, image, and sound archives; and hands-on repair and maintenance. Media archaeology is best undertaken, like any archaeological project, collaboratively, and so this class follows a hands-on research studio model commonly used in disciplines such as architecture or design.

HPSE-UE 12 Dean's Sophomore Success Seminar 0–2 Credits
Based on three pillars of experiential learning--exploration, collaboration, and engagement--this course introduces students to pathways of academic, personal and professional achievement. The course includes three main components: self-assessment, understanding mentorship, and understanding leadership. Students will conduct individual and group self-assessments and interest inventories; identify and cultivate mentoring relationships in their field of study; and examine and practice leadership in both traditional and non-traditional modes. Course includes high-profile guest speakers, a high level of student involvement in constructing learning activities, and experiential learning trips to complement the on-campus experience.
