Environment of Performing Arts Administration

Introduction to the controlling elements affecting performing arts organizations in the United States. In addition to examining the position of the artist in society and in the labor market, the course analyzes the relationship of the environment to the production, marketing, and distribution of artistic services. Students study the derivation of the present environment, the relevance and import of tax exemption and nonprofit status, the organizational structures for arts organizations, the role of funding on all levels, and the strategies and techniques needed to manage performing arts organizations effectively.

Ethics of Data Science

Course is designed to build students’ ethical imaginations and skills for collecting, storing, sharing and analyzing data derived from human subjects including data used in algorithms. The course provides historical background to understand the tenets of informed consent, discrimination, and privacy. Using case study design, students will explore current applications of quantitative reasoning in organizations, algorithmic transparency, and unintended automation of discrimination via data that contains biases rooted in race, gender, class, and other characteristics.

Ethnography and Technology of Media

This seminar explores how ethnographers of technology and media conceptualize, conduct, and analyze their research. Students gain familiarity with a range of key qualitative field methods – taking fieldnotes, conducting participant observation, conducting interviews, writing thick descriptions of events, processes, and encounters – both through close readings of exemplary ethnographic work and through a sequence of hands-on exercises that allow students to apply these methods through their own original fieldwork.
