A flutist, educator, and artistic director, Laura Falzon Baldacchino has been on the faculty of the Music Theory and Composition program at NYU Steinhardt since 2015.
As a concert flutist Laura Falzon has performed solo, concerto, and chamber concerts in Europe, Asia, and the US, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and Kennedy Center, and appearing as soloist with orchestras and ensembles such as London’s Spectrum Ensemble, Stockholm’s Curious Chamber Players, Rasumovsky Quartet, Mimesis Ensemble, and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
Praised for her “versatile technique” (Musical Times) and described as “Fearless in tackling” new works (PAN, British Flute Society’s magazine), her passionate interest in new music has led to collaborations with many composers (Mohammed Fairouz, Dai Fujikura, Shirish Korde, Charles Camilleri, Halim El-Dabh, Victoria Bond, Bushra El-Turk, Kareem Roustom, Xinyan Li, Theodore Wiprud, and more) and her premiering many new works written for her. Her recent CD recordings, A Turk in America and New York Tapestries were reviewed as “haunting … beautiful … evocative tonal palette” (Flute Talk), “poetic and expressive” (Phoenix Classical), and “engaging … brilliantly delivered … in splendid sound” and “excellent ... accomplished artistry ... captivating program of new music.” (Fanfare magazine)
Falzon’s research interests include music pedagogy, intercultural musicology, performance, music education, and contemporary music. She has published articles and presented at national and international conferences. Since 1991, she has been very active in the field of Intercultural musicology as a scholar and performer in collaboration with the Center for Intercultural Musicology (CIMA), now the Centre for Intercultural Musicology at Churchill College, University of Cambridge (CIMACC).
