Jonathan B. Hall earned the Doctor of Music degree in Organ Performance and Literature at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University. While there, he taught and coordinated courses in advanced tonal ear training.

He wrote on the life and music of Calvin Hampton, the iconoclastic organist of Calvary Episcopal Church on Gramercy Park. That project became his book, Calvin Hampton: A Musician Without Borders and Hall continues to write and lecture on Hampton and his music.

He is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists and has served the Guild on the national level as chair of the Committee on Professional Certification; he is frequently published in The American Organist and other journals.
