Erica Saldívar García

Dr. Erica Saldívar García is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Director of the TESOL, Bilingual Education, and World Language Education unit within the Department of Teaching and Learning. Her research examines the bilingualism and biliteracy of multilingual youth, specifically focusing on raciolinguistic ideologies, language education policy, and the application of "proficiency" to bilingual Latinx students in heritage language contexts.
A former teacher, Dr. Saldívar García bridges theory and praxis by supporting educators in designing transformational learning experiences for multilingual learners. This commitment is reflected in her leadership of several key initiatives:
- Adult ESOL Community Voices: Authentic Learning for emergent educators in NYC
- The Multilingual Teacher Inquiry Community: Fostering collaborative practitioner research
- Enhancing Multilingual Multicultural Awareness in Bilingual Education
Beyond her department, she serves as the Co-Director of Teacher Education, where she oversees accreditation, licensure, and continuous improvement for all teacher education programs at NYU Steinhardt. Her doctoral research received the 2020 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the AERA Bilingual Education Research SIG, and she is a recipient of the 2024 NYU Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award.
Dr. Saldívar García earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Spanish from Wellesley College, followed by a Master of Science in Education and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
