Annaly Babb-Guerra

Clinical Assistant Professor

Teaching and Learning

Annaly Babb-Guerra is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the NYU Teacher Residency. She also serves as a Residency Director and Social Studies Content Mentor in the NYU Teacher Residency. She holds a B.A. in Law, Letters, and Society from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Teaching Social Studies from Teachers College-Columbia University, an M.Ed. in Learning and Teaching from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Qualitative Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Annaly’s research is focused on anti-racist, culturally sustaining, and humanizing pedagogy in the field of social studies and civic education. Her work has appeared in Teachers College Record, Journal of Social Studies Research, and Social Studies Research and Practice. She has presented at conferences throughout the United States on topics ranging from anti-oppressive social studies pedagogy and curriculum to fostering political open-mindedness and interest through project-based learning. Her co-authored paper, “How Can Youth Become Both Politically Engaged and Politically Open-Minded? Processes, Outcomes, and Challenges in the ‘Legislative Semester’ Program" won the AERA Social Studies Research SIG Outstanding Paper Award in 2016.

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Annaly’s coursework and research were supported by a University Fellowship and she was also a supervisor and instructor in the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction: Secondary Education program. In her role as a high school curriculum and instruction coordinator, Annaly developed social studies and writing curricula and coached novice and veteran teachers with a focus on social justice, equity, and student-centered learning. Before coming to NYU, Annaly served for over ten years as a social studies teacher in both the continental United States and the Virgin Islands.
