Lee Melvin M. Peralta

Clinical Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education

Teaching and Learning

Lee Melvin M. Peralta (he/him) is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education and M.S. in Statistics from Michigan State University, a M.A. in Mathematics Education from the City College of New York, and a J.D. and B.S. in Mathematics from Georgetown University.

He examines the sociomaterial, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of mathematics, statistics, and data science education. His work begins with the premise that constructions of competence in mathematics and statistics classrooms are unevenly distributed across lines of race, gender, class, ability, and other social identity markers. Drawing inspiration from music, the arts, science fiction, and other fields, he seeks to consider “otherwise possibilities” (a term that he borrows from Ashton T. Crawley) for STEM education. His approach to teaching and research centers themes of relationality, participation, and creativity.

Before joining NYU, Melvin was a graduate student at Michigan State University, where he was a University Distinguished Fellow. Before becoming a graduate student, he was a NYC middle and high school mathematics teacher and Math for America Fellow.
