Sarah L. Schlessinger

Dr. Sarah L. Schlesinger is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the NYU Inclusive Childhood Teacher Residency Program. She holds her Doctorate of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She received her Master’s in Special Education from Long Island University- Brooklyn and her Bachelor of Arts in Human Development from Connecticut College.

Dr. Schlessinger’s research and teaching focus on social justice as it is enacted through inclusive classroom practices, specifically referring to notions of normalcy, marginalization, and exclusion and the intersections of ability, race, and class. This research interest lies predominantly in the field of teacher education and professional development. Her work has appeared in such journals as Teaching and Teacher Education, The International Journal of Inclusive Education, and Teacher Education Quarterly. She is the author of the upcoming book The Resilient Teacher: Creating Positive Change through Inclusive Classrooms (In Press) and co-author of the book Narratives of Inclusive Teaching: Stories of Becoming in the Field (2021).

Dr. Schlessinger has held previous appointments as a lecturer at Teachers College, Columbia University, and an Assistant Professor at Long Island University - Brooklyn. She is the recipient of the 2015 AERA-sponsored Disability Studies in Education Outstanding Dissertation Award.
