GIFTED's mission is to strengthen the leadership capacity and visibility of women in education as leaders within the Ghanaian education system. In doing so, GIFTED Fellows become better positioned to produce a systemic change both in local schools and at the regional education office level. The GIFTED curriculum seeks to provide these leadership skills in an effort to promote GIFTED Fellows to actively participate in the decision-making processes, act as role models for other women and girls, and mentor other women.
GIFTED provides professional development, on-going support, and leadership training to cohorts of 12 women in education. Teachers who are selected for this fellowship program participate in a year-long transformational leadership curriculum and they develop and implement action projects that support education outcomes in their schools. Following their fellowship year, Fellows join the GIFTED Fostering Program. This program provides a support structure that contributes to the ongoing sustainability of GIFTED by delivering continued leadership training, career development and professional development networking to GIFTED alumnae. Additionally, it creates a platform for GIFTED Fellows to share experiences and support each other for leadership development.
GIFTED began in June 2013 and is a partnership between New York University, the University of Education Winneba, University of Minnesota, and Mujeres for Africa, sponsored by Banco Santander and Newman's Own Foundation.
