Terence Mayo (he/they) is a Black queer feminist critical educator, social impact strategist, and LGBTQIA+ youth advocate. He is a doctoral student in the Department of Teaching and Learning, specializing in Urban Education. He holds degrees in Business, Secondary Education, and Religion.
He comes to New York University with over 15 years of experience in education (K-12 & Higher Education), non-profit leadership, and organizational consulting. Terence has worked with organizations nationwide to build beloved community through internal and external liberative change management processes. As a sought-after speaker, he has shared his expertise on various topics, including Black LGBTQIA+ youth, DEI, education-community partnerships, public theology and social change, and trauma-informed community strategies. He has been a fellow with several non-profit organizations and educational institutions, including the Institute for Policy Studies, Vanderbilt University, and the Pacific School of Religion.
As a scholar, his research examines the psycho-social and faith development of African Diasporic LGBTQ+ youth within transnational community settings. As a secondary area of study, Terence investigates the uses of African Diasporic literature and arts within learning spaces.
