Sandra Ajaps

Doctoral Student

Teaching and Learning

Sandra has a bachelor's degree in Geography Education from the University of Nigeria and an MPhil degree in Psychology and Education from the University of Cambridge. Both degrees and their cumulative theses have environmental education themes that have been built upon in her doctoral dissertation. Her research focuses on decolonizing environmental education, and education in general, in countries with a colonial past for more effective environmental education and conservation. Her dissertation is a participatory action research project with ten Nigerian teachers working to identify the colonizing elements in their curriculum and practice, as well as exploring avenues to transform environmental education pedagogy through the integration of indigenous environmental knowledge and learning methods. This is aided by a decolonization model the teachers developed and are currently implementing. Sandra is also interested in comparative studies of environmental behavior in relation to geographical factors. She has taught in secondary schools and universities in Nigeria and in New York and plans to continue her career in academia upon graduation. She has also authored and co-authored a few journal articles.
