Robin's research focuses on exploring how teachers can support the development of children with anxiety and behavior problems. With Erin O'Connor as her doctoral advisor, she's currently working on a follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial of an early childhood social-emotional program called INSIGHTS. In addition to her work on INSIGHTS, she is researching how prevalent messages about child-rearing are perpetuated in the media and how they are perceived by parents. Parents are exposed to pervasive and potentially harmful messages like “bullying toughens kids up”, “preschool is just glorified babysitting”, “vaccinations have dangerous side effects”, and “kindergarteners are too young to have anxiety.” How do these messages persist despite a wealth of research against them? Her research aims to address this question using a mixed-methods approach by leveraging online data to examine how the media environment contributes to the emergence and persistence of these messages. Then she will conduct interviews to explore parents’ own stories, doubts, and experiences with these messages. Prior to NYU, Robin worked in preschools and elementary schools in Madrid, Copenhagen, and St. Louis.
