Immerse yourself in Tulsa’s vibrant community through the NYU Tulsa Study Away experience, offered with partial scholarships for the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Gain hands-on counseling experience while working with local organizations dedicated to women’s empowerment and mental health advocacy. Who can participate:
Current Counseling@NYU (Online Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness) students who have completed the following prerequisite courses:
- APSY-GE 2661 - Foundations of Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness
- APSY-GE 2651 - Professional Orientation and Ethical Issues in Mental Health Counseling
- APSY-GE 2682 - Cross-Cultural Counseling
- APSY-GE 2657 - Counseling Theory and Process
- APSY-GE 2038 - Abnormal Psychology
- APSY-GE 2620 - Group Dynamics (eligible to be completed in Summer 2026 as a practicum corequisite)
- APSY-GE 2138 - Human Growth and Development
Residential (in-person) students are not eligible to participate due to the remote nature of the program.

Participants enroll in a regular course load while in Tulsa and simultaneously participate in fieldwork with local organizations focused on women’s empowerment and mental health advocacy.

Direct Costs Billed by NYU
Participants are billed for Tuition, Registration, and Program fees for the courses they take while in Tulsa. Payment is due based on Bursar's Payment Schedule.
Out-of-Pocket Costs
Students are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Tulsa. In addition, participants should budget for other out-of-pocket costs, including daily meals; transportation to and from the fieldwork site; and other personal incidentals. These costs will vary depending on individual students' budgets, preferences, and choices. Students are encouraged to research potential costs by using online budgeting tools such as Numbeo, Expatistan, and Budget Your Trip.
Scholarships
Students approved to participate in this study away program will receive a $6,000 NYU Tulsa Scholarship award in each term (Summer, Fall, and Spring) for a possible maximum award total of $18,000. Thanks to a generous gift from the George Kaiser Family Foundation, this scholarship is in addition to any other financial aid the student may receive. It will be implemented as a reduction of the student’s NYU bill for each term.

Housing
Students are responsible for securing their own housing in the Tulsa area.
High-quality, unfurnished 1BR apartments in downtown Tulsa typically rent for about $1,200 to $1,800 per month. Studio apartments rent for somewhat less. Lower-priced options are available a short distance from downtown. The Tulsa Remote program has developed a very robust and curated tool to help movers find apartments in the city, with all listings validated by Tulsa Remote staff. Several options for furnished apartments are available.
If desired, students may have the option to select into NYU Tulsa student housing, as unit availability allows. This option requires advance notice and a long-term commitment (e.g., 9 to 12 months). Current rates for a furnished single in NYU Tulsa student housing are $7,774 per semester, or about $2,250 per month.
Transportation
Participants are responsible for securing their own on-the-ground transportation while in Tulsa, including for getting to and from the fieldwork site.
