Leadership representatives from 10 New York City charter school organizations gathered last month to learn more about partnering with NYU Steinhardt as part of its innovative model for teacher prep, the Teacher Residency master of arts in teaching (MAT) program.
Participants at the Summit heard from the Director of Teacher Education at Steinhardt, Diana Turk, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean, Dominic Brewer, and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Ted Madger. Attendees also visited a current teacher residency partner, Lighthouse International Charter School where they met with current students, teaching mentors, and charter school leadership.
New charter school partnerships for the 2019 residency training sites will be finalized in early winter 2019 for incoming students beginning the Teacher Residency program in July 2019. This program, now in its third year and currently the only university-based teacher residency program with a national footprint, partners with school districts and charter networks to prepare the next generation of teachers.
In this teacher prep model, students are hired by our partner schools for full-time positions while earning their master’s degree with deep support from content-expert faculty in Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning and experienced teaching mentors in partner schools.
