Several members of NYU's Performing Arts Administration program contributed to the Southeastern Arts Leadership Educators Conference held at the College of Charleston in South Carolina on February 9th and 10th, 2024. Among the scholars were Dr. Richard Maloney, Dr. Ruby Yu, Dr. Anthony Rhine, and Yingru Huang (‘25).
The Southeastern Arts Leadership Educators (SALE) association promotes transformative arts administration in the southeastern United States. This two-day conference brought together arts leadership professionals and scholars to stimulate discussions about arts organizations and their impact.
Yingru Huang ('25), a first-year graduate student in the PAA program, gave her first academic presentation at this conference. Huang's presentation, titled "Alameda Ballet Academy and Alameda Civic Ballet: A Case Study into the Power of Locality in the Performing Arts," highlighted the cultural significance of her hometown's ballet institutions. She showcased how these organizations have integrated themselves into the local community, shaping its identity and fostering a love for the arts.
Accompanying Ms. Huang were faculty members from the NYU PAA program, including Dr. Ruby Yu. She presented "Arts Management in Times of Crisis: A Comparative Perspective from the US and China,” analyzing the crisis response systems in both countries and discussing their advantages and disadvantages.
The program director, Dr. Richard Maloney, spoke on "Arts Administration Doctoral Education in the United States: Past, Present, and Future." He provided an overview of PhD programs in arts administration and examined the differences between theoretical and practical approaches to doctoral education.
PAA Adjunct faculty Dr. Anthony Rhine delivered two presentations -- "What is Engagement and Why are the Arts Leading the Way...Again?" and “A History of Arts Administration Education in America.” His research explored the concept of engagement and its role in marketing, using the arts as a model to understand how organizations can better connect with consumers.
These presentations underscored the value of academic conferences in providing a platform for students and faculty members to share their research and insights, further enriching the discourse in the field of performing arts administration.
