Theme: A LUTA CONTINUA [The struggle continues]

We are living in an unprecedented time of anti-transgender violence. Yet, in the face of political and social repression, there has been significant and powerful resistance: all over the U.S., queer and trans adults, youth, and our accomplices are fighting back!

This call for art invites current students ages 21 and younger to represent, grapple with, showcase, and/or explore the ways in which queer, trans, and other 2SLGBTQIA+ people have historically fought back against violent forces or are currently resisting oppression at home, at school, in their communities, or more broadly in society.

We invite interested students to submit their art to be considered for Volume 51, Issue 2 of Voices in Urban Education (VUE), “ACTing UP and Looking Forward: Resistance and Resilience in Queer and Trans Education."

Some topics covered in the issue include:

  • Conversations between and among queer and trans youth, exploring how they navigate life and when they feel most supported
  • Multi- and transgenerational conversations comparing and contrasting political and social resistance in the past to the resistance efforts of today
  • Artistic representations of queer and trans young people’s sources of happiness, pleasure, and joy
  • The legal history and stories of trans youth who have accessed Title IX to address discrimination experienced in school
  • The transgressive and transformative power of vocal training and music classes for trans and disabled youth
  • And more!

This is an awesome opportunity for student artists looking to showcase their creative skills. The journal VUE (at NYU Metro Center) is seeking talented students to design themed art pieces that celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ students and recognize their lived experiences.

Student art submissions should be shared as high-resolution images of at least 300 ppi (pixels per inch). This resolution ensures the integrity and quality of the image throughout the journal production process.

Entries will be judged by a select group of jurors on the VUE Editorial Board on their execution of the theme, artistic merit, design, originality, technical excellence, and content.

Two student artists will receive an award valued at $150 and will have their art included as the cover art for the 2nd issue of the 51st volume of VUE. Additional awards valued at $50 will be given to student artists whose art is included in the issue.

Submit your artwork and any questions to nyumetro-vue@nyu.edu.
All submissions must be received by Monday, May 1, 2023. In the submission email please include your name, the title of your piece(s), and a 1-3 sentence description of your art.
