Fern J. Khan (BS ’62, Sociology) Pens Her Life and Experiences as a Jamaican Immigrant

Fern Khan shares how NYU shaped her life, her experiences immigrating to the United States, a meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt, and much more. 

“In reading my story, I hope that readers will experience a bit of excitement, amazement, and some inspiration in tracing my journey from Jamaica to America,” says Fern J. Khan (NYU Steinhardt, BS ’62, Sociology; NYU Silver School of Social Work, MSW ’64), author and Dean Emerita of Bank Street College’s Division of Continuing Education, who recently published her memoir, Through Jamaican Lenses.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Khan’s heritage has shaped many aspects of her life. Her early experiences fostered an unwavering sense of self that guided her as she moved to the United States and pursued a 40-plus-year career in higher education in New York. 

In her memoir, Khan celebrates her vibrant yet challenging upbringing, her unique story as an immigrant to the United States, and her many accomplishments—both personal and professional.
