Faces of Food Safety: Joseph Ndungu (MA ’12)

Joseph Ndungu, an alumnus of the department’s MA in Food Studies, was selected from approximately 10,000 US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) employees to be honored with a feature in the agency’s monthly newsletter.

As a compliance investigator for the USDA, Ndungu ensures that meat, poultry, and processed egg products are safe to consume and packaged in accordance with federal regulations. He also assists in the removal of unsafe products from commerce—sometimes, his position requires going undercover to assess potential food safety violations at retail stores or warehouses.

Before joining the USDA, Ndungu served as a food supply specialist with the US Army.

“It is as if my whole life in the food industry was preparing me for this specific agency and position,” Ndungu said. “I wanted to make a difference and to learn about the regulations that govern our food industry.”

Congratulations, Joseph!
