Angela Wu Awarded AAUW Fellowship

Angela Wu, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, has been awarded an American Fellowship from The American Association of University Women (AAUW) for academic year 2021-22. Wu’s project, titled “Cybernetics of Public Culture: From a Socialist Media System to Online Data Analytics,” will examine how public culture takes shape when systems thinking, especially systems cybernetics, informs its conception and governance.

AAUW is one of the world’s leading supporters of graduate women’s education, empowering women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. For the 2020-21 academic year, AAUW is awarding a total of $3.5 million through seven fellowships and grants programs to more than 200 scholars, research projects and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls. AAUW’s largest funding program, American Fellowships is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious fellowship programs exclusively for women.

Wu’s research focuses on engagement with digital media and big data analytics, and on Chinese information technology and political cultures. Her work has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)/Henry Luce Foundation in China Studies and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation. Wu holds a PhD in Media, Technology and Society from Northwestern University. She received her Master of Philosophy in Communication from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and her B.A. in Journalism and Communication with a Minor in Applied Computer Science from Tsinghua University.
