The Gerald Pryor Art Award made it possible for me to fully engage with my artistic practice during my semester at NYU Berlin by helping cover essential materials, research, and project-related costs. It enabled me to treat my semester abroad not simply as a period of study, but as a focused time of artistic research and production. Beyond the practical support, receiving the award felt like the department placing real faith in me as an artist.

I met Gerry as a student during my master’s program in photography in 1984. As a teacher, Gerry was loose, cool, and kind. He taught us to see photography as part of a broad context that included philosophy and critical theory. It was clear that Gerry really cared about his students and was 100% invested in teaching.
