In the fall of 2025, Steinhardt’s Verbatim Performance Lab began an arts-based investigation of the following research questions:
* How do people residing in the United States describe their experiences with migration?
* How does migration impact a person’s identity?
* How does migration impact a nation’s identity?
The result is a working data set comprised of over 150 excerpts from interviews conducted with participants across the country. At the event, the audience will engage with and hear verbatim excerpts from these interviews by exploring one of three unique investigative paths:
Option 1: Self-Discovery Investigation 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
Participants can sort through excerpts of the interviews at their leisure, make connections, draw conclusions, and converse with the artistic team about their process.
(Think interactive museum exhibit)
Option 2: Collaborative Community Coding Investigation 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.
Participants will step into the shoes of an artist-researcher and engage in an active sorting process to identify emerging patterns, themes, and moments of resonance.
(Think interactive workshop)
Option 3: Performance Investigation 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
Audience members will embark upon an interactive exploration featuring a selection of voices from participants interviewed for this project. The performance concludes with a participatory activity that will help inform the development of a new version of the project for this fall.
