Small Classes and Doctoral Seminars
Courses in this program prepare you to conduct independent research in your area of interest. You'll conduct reviews of theoretical and empirical research on topics related to your research focus, learn the art of writing research proposals, and ultimately conduct independent research and disseminate the findings. You will also attend doctoral seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of content and research methodology.

Curriculum
The 48-60 credit PhD in Teaching & Learning (English Education Concentration) equips you with the analytical skills necessary to thrive in a career as an academic researcher or teacher educator in English education. You’ll emerge from the program as an independent researcher adding depth and complexity to conversations about literature, reading, media education, composition education, curriculum development, applied linguistics, and more.
Program of Study
You’ll take courses in foundations of educational theory, research methodology, and dissertation research and preparation. At the beginning of your program, you will be matched with a faculty mentor who will serve as your primary advisor and will help you to design an individualized curriculum that will allow you to develop specialized content knowledge and research expertise. Through coursework, independent studies, and doctoral milestone tasks, you will also have the opportunity to seek guidance and mentoring from other faculty. In addition to coursework, other milestones include the writing of a candidacy paper, the completion of oral comprehensive exams, and the culminating activity, the writing of a dissertation.
