The Chief Marshal is a special honor designated by the Dean bestowed upon a faculty member within NYU Steinhardt. This prestigious role leads the platform party procession at the start of the ceremony and carries the official academic mace, a wooden staff with the University and School seals symbolizing the School’s faculty body and signifies the official proceedings of the ceremony. Additionally, the Chief Marshal is the faculty representative who salutes the graduates while formally opening the ceremony. Chief Marshals are selected for their commitment to leadership, teaching, and service to our students and the greater academic community.
