NYU Steinhardt offers two scholarships specifically for Steinhardt students participating in a short-term, travel-based Global course for credit: the Global Need-Based Scholarship and the Global Study Scholarship.
Global Need-Based Scholarship
The Steinhardt Office of Global Affairs offers a competitive, need-based scholarship to support participation in Steinhardt January, Spring Break, and Summer short-term study abroad programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $2000 and are applied in the form of a credit to the student's Bursar bill for the term in which study abroad takes place.
Eligibility
Students are eligible to apply so long as they:
- Are currently completing a Steinhardt graduate or undergraduate degree program
- Have submitted an application to participate in a short-term, travel-based Steinhardt Global course
- Display financial need through the documents requested on the scholarship application
Both U.S. citizens and international students are eligible to apply.
Students are not eligible to receive this scholarship if they:
- Are not currently enrolled in an active Steinhardt graduate or undergraduate degree program, or are graduating prior to participating in their study abroad course
- Have previously received a Steinhardt Global Need-Based Scholarship award
- Are enrolling as a non-credit participant
- Receive tuition remission from NYU (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
- Received, during the current academic year, a fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistants)
- Are participating in a virtual global course with no travel component
How To Apply
Once you have submitted your application to study abroad, you may proceed with completing the Global Need-Based Scholarship Application:
- Log into your application status portal (current students | visiting students) and click on the "Global Affairs Study Abroad" application link at the bottom of the page
- Click on the "Need-Based Scholarship Application" tab, then the "Apply Now" button
Please apply for this scholarship concurrently with your study abroad application so that the materials can be reviewed together.
Submission Requirements
You will be asked to upload the following documents in PDF or DOC format:
- Financial Need Statement: An essay of approximately 250 words that describes your current financial circumstances and explains the gap between your financial resources and the cost of studying abroad. Information about the expenses you are managing, the way you are funding your academic studies, and any personal circumstances that impact your financial situation is helpful
- Financial documentation:
- All applicants must submit a copy of their NYU Bursar Bill showing their billing and payment history for the duration of their time at Steinhardt
- In addition:
- US citizens must submit a copy of their FAFSA Submission Summary
- International students must submit financial documentation demonstrating their financial need. This may include documentation of loans or other sources of funding being used to finance their education, documentation showing expenses and/or income, or any other documentation that shows financial need. Documents should be from sources such as banks, loan providers, etc. Personal attestations will not be accepted
Scholarship Application & Notification Deadline
The need-based scholarship application and notification deadlines are the same as those for the Steinhardt short-term study abroad program applications. You can find these on the "How to Apply" page (scroll down to "Application Deadlines and Notification Timelines").
Global Study Scholarship
We believe that faculty-led graduate-level study abroad can significantly enhance your professional and academic training. To support participation in Steinhardt study abroad programs, NYU Steinhardt offers select candidates a one-time scholarship of up to $3,000 to be used toward the cost of tuition and the Program Fee for a Steinhardt-based graduate study abroad course or program at one of our global sites or approved study away sites. Recipients of this award can request to have their award applied to any term in which they are participating in a Steinhardt-sponsored study abroad program. This scholarship is in addition to any other financial aid a student may receive, and is available to incoming students only.
The scholarship is offered upon admission to a graduate degree program at NYU Steinhardt. Students who did not receive a Global Study Scholarship when they were accepted to study at NYU Steinhardt are not eligible to receive this scholarship.
Students who were awarded a Global Study Scholarship and who would like to use these funds must first apply and be accepted to a Steinhardt graduate study abroad program. Then, the student should contact the Office of Global Affairs to indicate that they would like to use their Global Study Scholarship in the coming term. Global Affairs will work with the Steinhardt Office of Graduate Admissions to apply the award towards the term in which the student is studying abroad.
