NYU Steinhardt is committed to innovative and accessible teacher education. Beginning Fall 2026, every newly admitted full-time student in the MA in Educational Theatre, All Grades and English, Grades 7–12: Dual Certification program will receive a $15,000 per year scholarship. Apply now and start shaping the future of education.

The 45-credit MA in Educational Theatre and English Education (Initial Certification) enables prospective English teachers to leverage new modes of artistic expression to help students understand and analyze textual material. Blending hands-on, innovative training in both English education and educational theatre, this program equips teachers to promote literacy and textual investigation through a range of drama and theatre techniques.

Core Course Sequence

The MA program features an English content core exploring reading, language, writing, and theatre. You’ll gain pedagogical training in best practices in teaching and learning, specialized instruction in utilizing drama techniques in the classroom, and extensive experience student teaching. The program culminates in a curriculum project shaped by your experiences in the student teaching practicum.

Culminating Experience

All students are required to complete a Culminating Experience capstone project with their academic advisor (by advisement).

As a part of this course, students will also participate in 75 hours of fieldwork (150 hours in total are required in advance of student teaching.)

MPAET-GE 2193 Drama in Education I OR Restricted Electives may be fulfilled over the summer with Study Abroad or on campus courses.

Additional Requirements to be recommended for NY State Teaching Certification in Theatre, All grades, and English, Grades 7-12:

  1. Students must successfully complete the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations. Scores must be submitted to the State Education Department before it will consider issuing a certificate to teach in the public schools of New York State.
  2. Students must complete 150 hours of fieldwork in approved educational settings prior to student teaching.
