The 30-credit MAT in Teaching Math, Grades 7–12 (Initial Certification) equips you with the tools and training to teach math and design mathematical pedagogy, allowing you to serve diverse student populations. Designed to help you transform how math is taught to teenagers, you will learn to utilize technology and develop adaptive curricula to support the needs of students with disabilities. The program empowers you with a holistic approach to education, innovation, and exploration.
This program is open to participants who have a bachelor’s degree but who are not yet certified to teach.
Core Course Sequence
You’ll take pedagogical core courses in inquiries in teaching and learning, adolescent learners in urban contexts, and issues in special education policy. You’ll participate in workshops in world language education, specialized fieldwork in Math education and language and literacy acquisition, and two semesters of mentored student teaching. The program culminates with courses focused on teaching secondary mathematics, mathematical proof and proving, and educational technology in secondary school mathematics.

Please note: The program curriculum outlined below applies to the 2025–2026 academic year. Beginning in Fall 2026, the program sequence will follow a Fall–Summer I structure (ending in mid-June) and will include a final capstone experience in Summer I.
