Professional Licensure

DPT, Entry-Level Physical Therapy

DPT is an on-campus program that places students in supervised field experiences both within and outside of New York State (NYS). NYU is authorized pursuant to the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) to enroll students in supervised field experiences in the SARA states and territories. For further details regarding NYU's SARA membership please visit NYU State Authorization website. SARA requires universities to disclose to applicants and students whether programs that lead to professional licensure meet the educational requirements for licensure in those states in which students are doing learning placements.

The NYU Steinhardt DPT Program meets the educational requirements for licensure in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Graduation from an accredited program is required for licensure to practice physical therapy in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The NYU Steinhardt DPT program is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). CAPTE is an accrediting agency that is nationally recognized by the US Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Steinhardt DPT conducts placement activity in the following states outside NYS and has made the following determination with respect to additional professional licensure requirements, beyond educational requirements, in those specific states.

Please note, all states may require an applicant to: be of good moral character; obtain a passing rate on the NPTE exam; submit a complete and accurate application for licensure, which may include such requirements as submitting a passport-sized photo, providing proof of legal residence in the United States, submitting, or having the applicant’s program submit, verification of graduation and disclosing all previous names; pay all required fees; and undergo some sort of background check, among other requirements.

Additionally, please be aware that the presence of a misdemeanor, felony or violation conviction on an applicant’s record may bar the applicant from obtaining a license to practice physical therapy.

If you are interested in having a placement in a different state or gaining licensure in a different state other than what is listed in the chart below, please contact Jerry Powell at gp2549@nyu.edu to discuss if this is possible.

Note, state regulations for additional licensure requirements beyond your educational preparation in our DPT program change frequently, and the information posted here may have changed at the time of your specific application to or enrollment in our program of study. Please check with Thomasina Cochran at cochrt02@nyu.edu if you have specific questions about additional licensure requirements in a specific state.
