Four NYU Steinhardt Percussion Studies students took center stage during the NYU Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening concert on October 2, performing Re(new)al, a percussion quartet concerto by composer Viet Cuong.

Graduate students Lucas White and Bella de la Cruz joined undergraduate students Annie Sun and Atticus Muuss for the performance, which showcased their musicianship, precision, and collaboration.

Re(new)al explores reinvention through an inventive combination of traditional percussion instruments and unconventional objects, including crystal glasses, compressed air cans, and a vibraphone prepared with aluminum foil. The work requires extraordinary coordination, with all four performers sharing instruments and dividing intricate musical passages among themselves.

Led by conductor Diego Garcia, the NYU Symphony Orchestra opened its season with a program featuring works by Rossini, Cuong, and Beethoven.

The performance highlighted the talent and versatility of NYU Steinhardt's Percussion Studies students and their ability to bring innovative contemporary music to life.
