Professor Dafna Naphtali awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Dafna Naphtali, an adjunct faculty member in Music Technology, is the recipient of a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship. She is one of two Steinhardt professors to be awarded the prestigious Fellowship. Naphtali composes and performs experimental, interactive electro-acoustic music, drawing on a wide-ranging musical background in jazz, classical, rock, and near-eastern music. She also writes her own software.

Her plan for the Fellowship is to compose an evening-length set of interrelated compositions (machines & memory) for acoustic musicians, voice and live electronic sound-processing of acoustic performers. The work will be performed live over a multichannel sound system (8 channels) and recorded for release.

Naphtali’s project is currently underway and she will be presenting the first materials at an upcoming show on April 24th at Roulette (DUOS++OCTET), with two fellow NYU faculty members, Gordon Beeferman from FAS and Music Technology’s Hans Tammen.
