Welcome Reception for New Doctoral Students
Steinhardt's New Doctoral Student Welcome reception takes place at the start of each fall semester for that year’s entry class. It is an opportunity to meet some of our faculty and staff, and to make connections with other new doctoral students. The welcome reception for the Fall 2025 incoming class is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Final Oral Examination Filing Deadlines
The deadlines below are for filing for final oral examination. Please discuss your anticipated final oral examination date and dissertation filing date with your committee chairperson and members well in advance of the deadlines listed here. Find instructions on the procedures for filing your dissertation as well as required forms here. Each deadline date below corresponds to one of the three degree conferral dates (January, May, or August). You will also need to apply for graduation on Albert in accordance with their Graduation Deadlines.

Note: Final oral examinations may be held as Zoom meetings, hybrid meetings, or in person.
Defense-ready dissertations are due four weeks prior to your scheduled final oral examination date, and final dissertations (including all post-defense revisions) are due approximately three weeks before the degree conferral date.

Doctoral Convocation
In addition to the University's Commencement ceremony (which includes all schools and all degrees), the Steinhardt School holds a graduation ceremony for doctoral graduates each May. We encourage our doctoral graduates to attend this convocation and doctoral hooding ceremony.
January, May, and August doctoral graduates will be invited to attend the Doctoral Convocation ceremony in May. Invitations are sent to eligible candidates in late February.
