Curriculum

MA, Music Education in Communities

The 30-credit MA in Music Education in Communities  integrates strong musicianship, pedagogical expertise, and experiential learning, equipping graduates to tailor their professional path while embracing culturally sustaining practices, technological innovation, critical inquiry, and the rich cultural resources of New York City.

Course Sequence

You'll combine core coursework in current issues, perspectives, and research in music education with experiential learning, partnering directly with local community organizations to gain hands-on, real-world experience in music education settings. You'll hone your knowledge of music pedagogy and complete additional electives in areas most relevant to your professional goals.

Culminating Experience

The program culminates in a capstone course that guides you through the development and completion of a professional portfolio, synthesizing your growth as a musician, educator, and reflective practitioner.

You'll also develop and present a Graduate Lecture-Recital that translates your performance skills into pedagogical and artistic leadership. Rather than emphasizing technical virtuosity, your recital will demonstrate how you connect performance, analysis, cultural context, and educational practice.
