This course examines queer and transgender cultures through a range of visual forms. Students explore how sexuality and gender have been represented, contested, and imagined across a range of media, including film, television, photography, games, and digital and online practices, in American and transnational contexts. Through readings, screenings, and analysis, the course investigates how media shape understandings of identity, community, desire, and power, while attending to the historical and cultural conditions under which queer and trans lives become visible.
