The 128-credit BFA in Studio Art is an interdisciplinary program that combines intensive training in a range of studio art techniques with a progression of courses in art history, critical theory, and liberal arts. Throughout the program, you will develop technical and creative skills, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the role of art in society, empowering you to thrive in meaningful careers in the arts.
Core Course Sequence
In the BFA in Studio Art major, you will take a wide range of studio courses that provide a solid grounding in different techniques and theories and lay the groundwork for experimentation and expression. These progress from fundamental courses to intermediate and advanced project-based courses in painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, photography, video art, digital art, metals, ceramics, glass, and design.
The first-year Foundation Program, a focused progression of studio and critical art theory courses, enables students to explore many forms and philosophies of art making, giving them an unusually wide array of skills and visual languages with which to express their ideas. Students develop technical and analytical skills, as well as creative discipline, and a clearer understanding of the relationship between art and society. You will also complete Liberal Arts Core courses and choose departmental electives that match your interests and broaden your artistic skills.
You will have the chance to exhibit work, participate in shows, explore internships, and study abroad.
Culminating Experience: Senior Studio
In your final year, the year-long Senior Studio course offers the opportunity to develop your own artistic practice in a dedicated studio space while receiving rigorous feedback from faculty, visiting artists, and fellow students through individual and group critiques. This course culminates in a final thesis exhibition that showcases your final work and personal creative growth.
Continued Study
The 4+1 dual degree option allows students who are currently enrolled in the Studio Art BFA program to additionally earn a Master of Science degree in Integrated Design and Media (IDM) from the Tandon School of Engineering in as little as five years. The BFA in Studio Art + MS in IDM pathway opens a high-impact trajectory for students interested in interactive media, creative technology, and digital storytelling. IDM blends art, design, computation, and engineering, preparing students to work in roles spanning UX design, AR/VR, computational aesthetics, and digital production. The IDM degree enhances the creative and technical dimensions of a studio art background and offers students new pathways into cutting-edge creative industries.
BFA students may complete up to 12 graduate credits toward the MS beginning as early as their junior year. BFA majors interested in this option will need to meet with their undergraduate advisor and apply through an internal application process.
