About
Gopika Krishnan is a Music Technology PhD student and Global PhD Fellow at NYU's Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL), under the supervision of Dr. Carlos Guedes (NYU Abu Dhabi). Her research interests lie in music information retrieval and machine learning, with a focus on underrepresented musical traditions, source separation, and model interpretability.
Gopika received her B.S. in Computer Science from NYU Abu Dhabi. There she joined the Music and Sound Cultures (MaSC) group, working with Dr. Guedes and Dr. Kaustuv Kanti Ganguli on transcription and compositional tools for Carnatic percussion. During her Erasmus Mundus Master's in Artificial Intelligence, she completed her thesis on audio-visual singing voice separation at the Music Technology Group (MTG) in Barcelona, supervised by Dr. Martín Rocamora. She also spent a year at BMAT Music Innovators, building AI tools for the music industry.
Outside research, Gopika is a Carnatic violinist who has also tried her hand at guitar and oud. She's always on the lookout for the next stringed instrument to pick up.
