Erin Johnson

Erin Johnson serves as Director of the BFA Program in Studio Art and is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art Professions. She holds an MFA from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She was the 2024 Working Artist Fellow at Pioneer Works (Brooklyn, New York) and has participated in residencies at the Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht), the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (New York City), Hidrante (San Juan), and Lighthouse Works (Fishers Island, New York). In 2026, she received the Urban Video Project Commission from Light Work (Syracuse, New York). She was named one of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Film” in 2022, and her work has been featured in Art in America, The New York Times, Artforum, and other publications.

Johnson’s work has been exhibited at Essex Flowers (New York City); e-flux (New York City); BOAN1942 ARTSPACE (Seoul); BOFFO (Fire Island, New York); Rencontres Internationales (Paris and Berlin); BIENALSUR (Buenos Aires); MOCA (Toronto); MUNCH (Oslo); Sanatorium (Istanbul); Times Square Arts (New York City); Etc. Galerie (Prague); Cinalfama (Lisbon); deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Lincoln, Massachusetts); Billytown (The Hague); Galleria Eugenia Delfini (Rome); and REDCAT (Los Angeles), among others.

Johnson's work explores the entanglements of ecology, feminist science studies, and documentary practice. Her films and installations weave together speculative and archival research, performance, and personal narrative to reveal the colonial and heteronormative legacies embedded within scientific knowledge systems. Developed through collaborations with scientists, theorists, activists, and performers, these works—set everywhere from the United States’ largest nuclear weapons facility to one of the country’s largest herbaria—offer poetic meditations on survival, erasure, and possibility, while reimagining relationships to the natural world through a queer biocentric lens.
