About
Andrés (he/him) is a postdoctoral researcher at NYU, working with Dr. Tara McAllister in the BITS Lab in collaboration with MARL. He completed his Ph.D. in Phonetics, Phonology and Speech Sciences at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (Laboratoire de Phonétique et Phonologie, LPP), where he studied rhotics in French and American English using machine learning and Bayesian modeling. At NYU, he develops acoustic measures and classification models that detect distorted /s/ productions in speakers with dentofacial disharmony. The long-term goal is to drive real-time distortion detection and visual-acoustic biofeedback for speech therapy.
His research pairs acoustic, aerodynamic, and articulatory data, particularly from electromagnetic articulography (EMA), with machine learning to classify and model speech variation. Beyond clinical speech, he studies second-language learning and bilingualism, comparing simultaneous bilinguals and late learners to monolingual speakers of English and French. His work has appeared in Radical: A Journal of Phonology and at ICPhS, ISSP, PaPE, and R-atics. In 2024 he was an invited researcher at Haskins Laboratories (Yale University).
Before joining NYU, Andrés also taught English phonetics and phonology at Sorbonne Nouvelle as a teaching and research fellow (ATER). His co-authored photograph of an EMA experiment entitled Sur le bout de la langue, won the Grand Prix du Jury in the CNRS 2023 “La Preuve par l’Image” competition.
