Rodney Crowell is the Spring 2025 NYU Steinhardt-Americana Music Foundation Artist-in-Residence

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell will be the NYU Steinhardt- Americana Music Foundation Artist-in-Residence for Spring 2025 at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Crowell will work with and perform for students, faculty, and alumni during a three-day residency March 3-5, 2025. A joint effort of NYU Steinhardt and the Americana Music Foundation, the program aims to spotlight Americana music’s heritage, preserve its legacy, and ensure its future. It began in 2021-22 with Rosanne Cash, followed by bluesman Taj Mahal in 2022-23, and Brandy Clark and Allison Russell in 2023-24.

Joe Henry, the previous NYU Steinhardt-Americana Music Foundation Artist-in-Residence, will interview Crowell for the NYU Steinhardt Songwriting program’s WORDS & MUSIC series on Monday, March 3. He will also join Crowell for a songwriting workshop the following evening. All of the events are open to the NYU community.

Knott, the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

“Rodney is not only a great songwriter, but truly one of our nation’s great artists,” adds Jed Hilly, executive director of the Americana Music Foundation. “He is a poet and a craftsman whose work stands out in every medium in which he engages.” “We’re honored to host Rodney, and Joe’s participation is a most welcome bonus,” says NYU Steinhardt’s Director of Songwriting Phil Galdston. “The opportunity to hear and learn from these artists is one we’re very proud to offer our students.”

Born and raised in Houston, Crowell first gained recognition in Nashville in the 19070s, along with musicians including Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Steve Earle. He performed in Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band in the 1970s, starting their long musical association. Their 2013 album, Old Yellow Moon, won the 
Album of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album.

Crowell has received 18 Grammy nominations, winning two. He has written 15 No. 1 hits, including five off his album, Diamonds & Dirt. He has performed with and written for a who’s who of musicians, from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Keith Urban to Etta James, Ringo Starr, and Jeff Tweedy. He has been honored with the American Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting, the 2017 ASCAP Founder’s Award, and the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award. Crowell has also been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
