Clinical Assistant Professor Sarah Louden and Adjunct Professor Adem Birson received the Pedagogy of Music Theory Award at the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Minneapolis. The award recognizes their creation of the NYU Music Theory & Aural Skills Anthologies—a collection of more than 10,000 open-source musical examples developed to accompany fifteen newly designed courses in the undergraduate music theory sequence. The anthologies expand the traditional canon to include a wider range of musical styles, including popular music, film, theatre, global traditions, and works by women, BIPOC composers, and other underrepresented groups. At the same conference, Louden also presented a paper on the band Fanny and the use of AI tools to address repertorial inequities in the theory classroom.
