Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires

Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires is a new, research-driven experiential learning opportunity developed by NYU Buenos Aires, NYU Steinhardt, and Global TIES for Children research center. Designed for students looking to connect academic study with community-based impact, this program offers a structured placement experience supported by faculty mentorship, a robust academic framework, and deep engagement with local organizations.

Students accepted into Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires receive a $3,500 award* to support their participation.

Program Overview

Through Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires, students apply classroom learning to real-world contexts by conducting original, research-informed work alongside practitioners in the field. As part of the placement process, students participate in an interview to help identify their interests, strengths, and goals, ensuring thoughtful and mutually aligned placements.

Students complete 8 credits through the program:

• 4 credits in the Experiential Learning Seminar, where students investigate vulnerability-related themes and examine how community organizations respond to local and structural challenges.
• 4 credits in a simultaneously taken course selected from a curated list of offerings that align with the program’s thematic pillars.

Note: Students take the 8 credits associated with Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires and will complete the full-time enrollment requirement (12-18 credits) with a Spanish language class at the appropriate skill level, and may choose from the complete NYU Buenos Aires course offerings.

Together, the seminar, placement, and selected course deepen students’ understanding of social conditions in Buenos Aires while fostering critical reflection, cultural awareness, and community collaboration.

Meaningful Impact Through Community-Engaged Research

Placement sites span sectors that work directly with issues of vulnerability, resilience, and social equity. Possible placements include:

• Educational non-profits, schools and community organizations
• City of Buenos Aires offices
• NGOs supporting youth, migrants, or local neighborhoods
• Health organizations and public health programs
• Child psychologists and social workers

*Please note: some placements require a minimum of intermediate Spanish language skills.

Academic Course Options

Students in Global TIES Fellowship in Buenos Aires take one 4-credit course in addition to the Experiential Learning Seminar. Courses are selected for their thematic alignment with the program and their ability to deepen students’ understanding of regional histories, cultural dynamics, public health systems, and social change.

Students must first apply to semester study away, selecting NYU Buenos Aires as their first preference. A separate internship application must also be submitted by the deadline.
