Title: Exploring Motor Imagery as an Adjunct to Apraxia of Speech Treatment: Preliminary Outcomes and Participant Perspectives from MI-TEE
Abstract: Motor imagery, the mental rehearsal of movement without overt execution, has been used to support limb rehabilitation post-stroke but has received limited investigation in the treatment of motor speech disorders. Motor Imagery for Treatment Enhancement and Efficacy (MI-TEE; pronounced “mighty”) is a virtual, home-practice motor imagery protocol developed as an adjunct to behavioral speech therapy for persons with acquired apraxia of speech and co-occurring aphasia. This presentation will describe the development and implementation of MI-TEE and integrate quantitative and qualitative findings. Participants completed speech treatment with or without adjunctive MI-TEE across treatment phases, with MI-TEE completed at home on non-treatment days. Preliminary quantitative findings (N = 8) examining treatment response, generalization, and maintenance will be presented. Qualitative findings from semi-structured interviews (N = 16) provide insight into participants’ experiences with MI-TEE; domains include acceptability, feasibility, and usability. Together, these findings provide an initial examination of MI-TEE from both treatment-outcome and participant-experience perspectives and inform the continued refinement and investigation of motor imagery as an adjunct to behavioral treatment for persons with acquired apraxia of speech and aphasia.
