Title: When your mind can get in the way: Links between attention & stuttering
Abstract: We typically assume that attention is a productive and beneficial resource that enhances performance and facilitates successful outcomes. In this talk, we will examine different forms of attention, how this domain-general capacity is measured, and how attention can sometimes be allocated in counterproductive ways. We will apply these concepts to stuttering, exploring evidence that attentional patterns may influence both the manifestation of stuttering and how stuttering is experienced over time. The presentation will draw on a series of studies across age groups, including dual-task paradigms, attention-switching and cognitive-flexibility tasks, and attention-bias measures. The overarching goal is to highlight the complex intersections between attention and stuttering and to consider how modifying attentional tendencies may offer new opportunities for supporting people who stutter.
