NYU Metro Center Announces the Formation of Its New Youth Development and College and Career Readiness Unit

Posted

The Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools is proud to announce our new Youth Development and College and Career Readiness Unit. The Youth Development and College and Career Readiness (YDCCR) Unit at NYU Metro Center utilizes a tailored holistic approach to ensure our students maintain a strong academic standing and are prepared for the next stages of their lives. The Youth Development and College and Career Readiness Unit is comprised of two NYU Metro Center subunits; the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP), and the College Preparatory Academic (CPA)/1199 Workforce. Both offer students a framework through which they can grow and maintain their fluency in the systems and processes needed to advance past the high school level.

The Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) and College Preparatory Academic (CPA)/1199 Workforce tackle college and career readiness through an individualized approach that centers relationships with students and families to remove barriers to education systems and employment. Both programs work to not only improve the academic outcomes of our young people, but also understand the critical role of families in college and career readiness, and actively invest in youths' development and growth.

While it is standard practice to look to measures such as graduation rates or college acceptance rates to indicate success, LPP and CPA /1199 take a more expansive approach. In addition to improvement in grades and increases in college acceptance rates, at LPP and CPA/1199 “college and career readiness” is synonymous with youth participants developing a myriad of beneficial and transformative related skill sets, including:

  • Improved social and emotional fluency
  • Enhanced ability to form and improve relationships
  • Restored capacity to become an active member of their educational community
  • Sharpened advocacy and networking abilities

The Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) at NYU Metro Center

The Liberty Partnerships Program at NYU Metro Center is one of 51 projects in New York State that operate under a 1989 law passed in order to decrease dropout rates in the state. NYU LPP centers engagement and community building in order to accomplish its goals as a college readiness and drop-out prevention program. NYU LPP works not only to solidify relationships between students and administrators, offer counseling and enrichment services, and create community for students and families—but also to invest in the development of each young person as an individual and student.

The College Preparatory Academic (CPA)/1199 Workforce at NYU Metro Center

The College Preparatory Academic (CPA)/1199 Workforce at NYU Metro Center similarly takes a holistic approach to offering tailored enrichment, academic support, and college and career readiness programs. In order to ensure that students can adequately utilize the tools offered to them through college and career readiness programming, CPA/1199 works to create the optimal mental and emotional conditions for students to confidently make choices regarding their future.
