Assess Your School’s Racial Climate

With this checklist, you can assess aspects of your school’s racial climate. Please check the appropriate boxes if the statement is true of your school. The more items you have checked off, the further along your school is towards creating a more inclusive school racial climate (excluding items that seem negative).

Download the checklist or complete this interactive checklist.

Research teams at New York University and Harvard University used a method called the Delphi method (read more here) to create a checklist for school staff and administrators to measure their school’s racial climate. We asked a group of 11 panelists ranging from parents and educators to community organizers and research scholars to share their thoughts and knowledge on school racial climate. We created a checklist based on their shared responses to our initial survey questions. School staff, school leadership, administrators, parents, and students can use the checklist to begin to understand your school’s racial climate.

Please note: If you are interested in using the School Racial Climate (SRC) Checklist for your own research, please contact Dr. Diane Hughes at diane.hughes@nyu.edu and Blair Cox at ec3720@nyu.edu to collaborate on next steps.
