Joanna Geller, Assistant Director of Research, and Wendy Perez, Senior Research Associate presented on June 23 to an audience of 170 parents, teachers, administrators, and parent outreach workers at the IEL Rise Up for Equity Virtual Summit. Their session was called "3 New Books Get Real About Organizing for Systems Change in Schools, Districts, and Communities." They shared about their book, The Ripple Effect in Action: What 7 Parent Leadership Initiatives Learned from Participatory Evaluation, along with co-author, Luva Alvaraz of the Greater Rochester Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI). The two other books featured were Natural Allies: Hope and Possibility in Teacher-Family Partnerships by Soo Hong, and Just Schools: Building Equitable Collaborations with Families and Communities by Ann Ishimaru. Together, these books answer timely questions such as "How can teachers and parents build trusting and healing-centered relationships? How can BIPOC families truly gain power in their children's schools and districts? What conditions lead to authentic and impactful family leadership?"
