NYU Metro Center is pleased to announce the release of Cultivating New Ground: Shifts Towards Culturally Responsive Curriculum, a new report by Dr. Leah Q. Peoples, Dr. Andolyn Brown, Dr. Maria G. Hernandez, Reed Swier, and Dr. Leigh McCallen.
Drawing on an evaluation of five curricula nominated by educators, practitioners, and community members as culturally responsive, the report documents an encouraging shift—from "old ground" curricula marked by a lack of representation toward "new ground" curricula rooted in cultural responsiveness. Across the materials reviewed, the authors found increased representation of historically marginalized groups, asset-based narratives about characters and historical figures, content explicitly connected to students' lived experiences and communities, and teacher materials that help educators put culturally responsive strategies into practice.
The report also names the next frontier: broadening representation to reflect intersecting identities such as neurodiversity, varied family structures, and linguistic backgrounds; evolving family engagement so that caregivers become true pedagogical partners; and supporting educators in the deep work of examining their own biases. Together, these findings affirm that a more just educational future is not only possible but already underway.
