In honor of Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, the ASD Nest Support Project created a social media campaign to elevate Black Autistic Lives and affirm that Black Autistic Lives not only matter, but are central to our work as educators and therapists.
The campaign centers Black autistic advocates including Finn Gardiner (he/they), Tiffany Hammond (she/her), and Jen White Johnson, as we acknowledge the necessity to learn from their valuable perspectives, complex experiences, and vast contributions to our community and society. All students deserve to experience a genuine sense of belonging in their classrooms and schools. We can foster belonging and authentic connection by acknowledging and celebrating difference, creating meaningful opportunities for students to learn from each other, elevating the experiences and perspectives of Black and disabled folk, and building spaces representative of all students in recognition of their complex and intersecting identities.
We invite you to take time to explore these resources (on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to find guidance and inspiration, to learn and reflect, and to identify next steps for your classroom or therapeutic practice.
