Description
A team of researchers from New York University and Transformative Research are conducting a study to understand the outcomes associated with using the Culturally Responsive ELA and STEAM Scorecards. The Scorecard Outcomes Study will document stories that speak to schools,’ districts’, and communities’ progress toward culturally responsive curricula.
If you used either of the Scorecards, for any purpose, and would like to share your experiences, we encourage you to visit the study website: here. Please contact the research team if you have any questions or concerns.
Background
The ELA and STEAM Scorecards are tools that were developed to facilitate a participatory evaluation of curricula for cultural responsiveness. Since their release, they have been downloaded thousands of times and several hundred people shared their Scorecard results via our results form. Given the widespread use and anecdotal stories about Scorecard, the research team decided to conduct an empirical study to document and measure the outcomes of the Scorecard.
The purpose of this study is to document Scorecard users’ perceptions of the successes, failures, challenges, and stories that speak to communities’, schools,’ and districts’ overall progress toward culturally responsive curricula associated with using either the CRE ELA or STEAM scorecards. The research team will use a mixed methods approach to capture a wide breadth of information on Scorecard use and its associated outcomes, while also capturing rich, complex, and nuanced data that contextualize outcomes. The research team will use the following data collection methods: (a) user-submitted Scorecard evaluation data, (b) a questionnaire, (c) focus groups/interviews, and (d) analysis of artifacts and documents that are relevant to scorecard outcomes. Non-NYC DOE questionnaire and focus group participants will receive a gift card for their participation in the study.
Research Questions:
- 1) How does the use of the CRE ELA and STEAM Scorecards impact school communities? What outcomes are associated with Scorecard users and their communities?
- 2) How does the use of the CRE ELA and STEAM Scorecards influence school communities’ insights, strategies, and plans for pursuing culturally responsive curriculum?
- 3) How do CRE ELA and STEAM Scorecard use contribute to or challenge school communities’ processes for implementing equitable practices?
