Through the Looking Glass…Colors of Change (2026)

Through the Looking Glass…Colors of Change (Room 907)

Culturally Responsive Practices Track

Presenters: Mesha Joseph & Roslyn Odinga

Teachers are vital in creating inclusive classrooms, yet school history often omits or revises the stories of marginalized communities to favor Eurocentric narratives. This lack of representation directly impacts the engagement and self-esteem of students of color. In this session, participants will confront the historically unethical practices of the educational system and apply de Caluwé and Vermaak's "Five Colors of Change" framework. We will explore how to demand and activate power to take strategic action, building the narrative power of curriculum to challenge societal norms. Attendees will learn to move beyond passive acknowledgment toward active change-making, ensuring their instructional practices respect all cultures and histories while empowering students to see themselves reflected in their learning.
